Before the turn of the century, the lure of gold brought men from all corners of the world to the Transvaal. They passed through some of Africa’s most scenic untamed wilderness.

It is in this area that Jock Safari Lodge is based with our southern boundary being the old wagon route from Delagoa Bay into the interior. Today the wilderness experience we offer is unchanged . It is an area noted for its diversity in game, particularly the BIG FIVE.

Jock is set in the Kruger National Park, which is 2 million hectare and 20 000 m.

Very few of the animals have been relocated, except the Rhino, of which there are quite a few. The white Rhino population is up to ± 5000. They have been re-introduced in 1961 and they adapted very successfully because of the terrain, the habitat is perfect for these animals.

The Kruger National Park is divided into 22 sections and Jock was part of one of the 80 000 ha sections.

The Section Rangers were responsible for the veld and game in their area. With the concessions, certain areas were identified as not being utilized by the general public as these were pure wilderness areas, it was inaccessible as there were no roads.

Over a million visitors visited the Kruger Park every year and there is potential to have more. The Jock concession of 6 000 ha.

Jock has only been opened for 3 years. Jock has breathtaking topography and 2 pristine rivers originating within the borders of the national park with no alien vegetation in the rivers. The rivers are in full flow during summer with abundant fish life.

Towards the end of April and May the flow starts slowing and pools form.

The concept was born by the descendants of the Sir Percy Fitzpatrick the Niven Family. They used the funds of the trust of Sir Fitzpatrick, to build the lodge. They used this area, in order to be close to where the history took place i.e. Jock, Percy, the wagons, etc.

The Southern boundry is the old Voortrekker road, which was the transport route for supplies from the Delego bay which is now Maputo, up to the gold fields at Pilgrims Rust areas.

In 1982 the Niven Family built a fence around the camp and that helped in preserving all the trees. The conservation conscious Niven’s planted a whole lot of trees which are all indigenous. With the fences here the Elephants where not ableto enter the camp and destroy the trees, thus this has created an almost sub-tropical environment in the middle of the bush.

The Jock concession is the exact side profile of Jock the dog. There is still a lot of interest in Jock. Richard Kipling on hearing Sir Fitspatrick telling war stories to his children encouraged him to write the adventures of Jock.

At Jock we offer an African cuisine which incorporates an abundance of flavours accumulated on the routes followed by sir Percy Fitzpatrick. The head chef of Jock and her passionate team conjure up dishes of legendary proportions, allowing your taste buds to follow their own African journey.

The cuisine is presented in a variety of locations. From Silver service in the elegant dining room, to an eating adventure under the panorama of the African night.

A flycamp has been approved, but not developed as yet. An area has been identified in the middle of the wilderness, close to the windmill where there is water, where we will pitch a couple of safari tents with a wagon as a central feature and we operate trails from there. It is not as luxurious as Jock, but serves as a satellite to work from.

Wilderness trails in the park are booked out a year in advance.

Jock Safari Lodge is situated in the southern area of the Kruger National Park at the confluence of the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers, half way between Skukuza and Kruger International Airports.

It is approximately 35km to both airports with only 3km of dirt road. The lodge is surrounded by magnificent trees and an abundance of bird life.

From here our two track roads take you into 6000 hectares of exclusive traversing in the first private concession set in over two million hectares or 20 000 Square Kilometers of the Kruger National Park.

Rock art and Star gazing is a must see.

The lodge gets very hot during summer to 38 degrees – but there are the option of the aircons and the pool.

After breakfast they go for a walk and depending on the fitness of the guests it is normally ± 1 to 1½ hours. Our game rangers offer fauna and flora lectures and magnificient rock art viewing. Each topic is discussed and guests are welcome to set the pace as they wish. There is of course always the good possibility of game viewing on foot.

One returning to the lodge, one can relax in the suites or wollow in the pool before a scrumptious lunch.

Guests dont have to have a formal sit down lunch – they can order and enjoy on the salla.

The big game drive starts at 16:30, with coolbox with sundowners and snacks. We then stop to watch the sun going down in Africa.

Back at 8:30 - 9:00 where dinner is served at the boma near the wagons. You can choose to have dinner in the rooms if you wish for an etra fee.
