| Rafting:
Due to Makalali's prime location, very lose to the mighty Olifants
River in South Africa's Northern Province, it is possible to go
river rafting and abseiling, sometime during your visit to our unique
facility. For this above-mentioned purpose a professional River
Rafting Company utilizes the last 12-km of the Olifants Gorge. Two
man Croc rafts will aid you in conquering the many rapids, varying
from grade 2-4, with various cascades, chutes and quiet pools in
between, providing a lot of variety. It should be noted that this
is a lot of fun for young and old alike – families are also welcome.
Departure from the lodge will be at 7:45, to return in time for
an afternoon game viewing activity, at 15:00. Rates are R600 pp,
with a minimum of 4 guests having to participate to make to make
the above a reality.
Golfing:
Imagine strolling around in the world famous Kruger National Park
and having regular wildlife and bird sightings whilst slaving away
on the golf course. This all is possible as an added adventure during
your Makalali experience. Suggested times of departure from the lodge
would be 7:30 in summer and 8:30 in winter. Two or more guests can
partake in the above and it is suggested that in order to co-ordinate
bigger groups they should depart at half an hour intervals in groups
of 7. Rates are R390 pp (2-3 guests) and R330 pp (4+ guests) for 18
holes, and include green fees. Golf cars are available art R70 and
caddies as optional extra and club hire would be an additional R40.
Cultural
Experience and Cheetah Breeding Project:
Makalali invites you to come and experience the very intriguing
local Shangaan culture at a tribal museum. Day to day tasks and
activities are performed, just as their native ancestors did. Combined
with the above day trip is a visit to a facility which specializes
in the captive breeding of especially cheetahs. Essential research
is also being conducted on other endangered species of mammals.
It is important though to note that because of the nature of the
above project most of your sightings will be through enclosure fences.
You will be departing Makalali at 9:00 and be returning in time
for an afternoon game viewing activity. Rates are R500 pp for two
guests, R430 pp for 3-4 guests and 5 or more guests R360 pp. Above
rates would be determined by group size at the time the booking
is made.
Panorama
/ Escarpment Day Trip:
Makalali invites you to the splendor and history that lies embedded
in and around it's borders and the greater lowveld area and Drakensburg
escarpment. A full day trip will also allow you to visit the following
interesting places. Your journey starts with a rapid climb onto and
through the rugged yet picturesque plateau of the Drakensburg mountains
and then descending down into the Lowveld plains. Places of interest
along your way, include the Blyde River Canyon (gigantic gorge more
than 20 km long, cut out of the escarpment) and Bourke's Luck Potholes
(deep cylindrical cavities formed by swirling action of flood waters).
Pilgrims Rest (exact replica of a 19th Century mining town and Graskop
(a forestry village perked on a spur of the escarpment). We suggest
that you take a camera as an array of photo opportunities will present
themselves during your excursion and to those for whom shopping is
a way of life, there are numerous shops scattered along the way, where
local arts and crafts can be viewed and acquired. Departure time is
9:30, returning at 18:00. Rates are R600 pp for two guests, R490 pp
for 3-4 guests, and R430 pp for 5 or more guests. Rates include a
lunch at Pilgrims Rest and all entrance fees.
Educational
/ Nature Walks:
Optional to your normal daily game viewing activities, are a variety
of walks to choose from. Be it an Educational Walk (giving you insight
into some of the local superstitions and medical /practical uses
of a wide variety of plants), birding walk (because we are a lot
more quiet when we walk, calls can easily be heard and identified,
especially in and around the lovely Makutswi river), or for fitness
enthusiasts, a more strenuous walk, the option is yours. There is
no extra charge for the above mentioned walks.
Scenic
Flight:
Guests are invited to experience the breathtaking scenery and splendor
of Makalali and the Lowveld area by air. A small fixed wing plane
will be provide an arial view of some of Makalali's private reserves
surroundings, the Drakensburg Escarpment, and the world famous Kruger
National Park. Flying time is one to one and a half hours, and rates
are R600 per person for two or more guests.
